RGS Kids Parade their Pets
The RGS community proudly represented itself in this weekend's Desfile de los Ninos. Teachers, students, parents, and their many costumed furry and feathered friends made their way through the Plaza in celebration of what is always one of the highlights of the Santa Fe Fiesta for families. In the photo above, Mrs. Potter and Ms. Cottle lead the RGS contingent in the parade.

About the Board of Trustees: A Letter From Board President Fred Nathan |
Greetings!
I suspect that it is a bit of a mystery to many of you who the Board of Trustees of the Rio Grande School is and what exactly it is that we do. So I thought that it might be helpful to introduce each trustee to you and say a little about what they have done recently on behalf of RGS and our children.

First Parent Association Coffee & Meeting This Wednesday
The first RGS Parent Association meeting and Coffee in the Courtyard with new staff will take place this Wednesday, September 16 at 8:00 am. Join us in the courtyard for coffee, tea, and conversation with new staff, courtesy of the Parent Association, and stay for a PA meeting in Gilbert Hall at 8:30 am in which we will discuss exciting volunteer opportunities this year.
Parent Association meetings this year will take on a different tone under the leadership of parent Leah Swanson. Meetings will begin by discussing business and parent volunteer opportunties, but each will conclude with a special focus on parent education or general school updates and issues by school officials. This week's meeting will offer time with Head of School Jay Underwood and Associate Head Maureen Devlin, who will welcome any questions or thoughts you may have about the year ahead. |

No Time Wasted in Upper Grades Science
By Mollie Parsons, Science Specialist The upper cluster science classes started their year off with a bang--quite literally--as students designed experiments to test the strength of inflated balloons. This project introduced the scientific method, asking the budding scientists to make a hypothesis, keep accurate notes on the experiment, and draw a conclusion from their results. The second week of classes focused on the use of metric measurements. Using household and laboratory materials, students explored the connection between grams, liters, and meters. They also reinforced connections to mathematics by calculating volume and converting units from meters to centimeters. A lively debate ensued, as students discussed the merits of the metric versus imperial systems. Although most students appreciated the ease of using base ten, some were not convinced that the metric system should replace the current weights and measures used in the United States.
